Safety, Heritage and Ecology - Protecting the Site
By taking part in this activity, we commit to proactive care for Coalhouse Fort, its surroundings, people, and each other.

Coalhouse Fort is not currently open to the public. In arranging and participating in this activity we need to be careful and respectful of the heritage and ecology of the site, as well as of our own safety and that of others. This activity takes place with the Fort in a sensitive condition physically, at a time of year when the wildlife requires extra protection.
Coalhouse Fort Park and surrounding area is a Scheduled Monument, on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register. The surrounding area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), as Special Protection Area, and a Ramsar site. There are multiple heritage and conservation measures in place.

By attending this activity, you are committing to this proactive care, and to following instructions for safety, heritage and ecology protections.
-
The activity will take place outdoors and indoors, so make sure you wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and uneven ground.
-
No excessive noise on site to protect sensitive ecology at this time of year. No speakers, instruments or group screaming - save that for the summer!
-
Keep within the activity areas shown by your guides. Even in public areas. Don’t cross barriers, climb banks, crawl though holes, push through undergrowth etc. Our access to the site is dependant on our proactive respect. If in doubt, ask.
-
Don’t climb on any part of the structure. Don’t alter the structure in any way. Don’t touch or move things in the Fort without permission, including natural materials. Don’t remove anything from the site, or leave anything on the site without permission. Don’t use kit or materials that could endanger wildlife or damage the site. Leave the site as you find it.
-
No lone working - if you are on a roaming activity, stay in groups of at least 2, and stay in sight of the facilitator/s.
-
There are no charging facilities on site, so please make sure any devices you bring are fully charged.
-
Please bring your own drinking water - there is no tap in the Fort.
-
There is an excellent cafe by the gate, the Engine Tearoom . Please order in advance using the information received on booking. Menus here. You are also welcome to bring your own food, flask etc.
-
For safety, pets are not recommended due to the current condition of the site. (If you have a service or support animal, please get in touch so we can provide you with relevant safety information and support).
-
Please take your rubbish home with you.
-
Please protect the lives of team, visitors and their families who are immune-suppressed, and the livelihoods of freelancers, and do not attend if you are knowingly infectious e.g. if you are symptomatic with a respiratory infection, have a cold, covid, stomach bug etc. You might not feel too bad, but it could impact someone else much more seriously.
-
Treat other participants, those running or supporting the activity, and members of the public with warmth and consideration.
-
This project takes place as re-animation is beginning on site. Site visits or work being undertaken may overlap with activities taking place. Additional safety information will be provided where necessary.
-
Check the accessibility and travel information well in advance, and prepare accordingly: https://www.lhtrevail.com/chf-access
-
Please clear the site after the activity. We can have a maximum of 30 people on site and we need to be careful not to disturb overwintering waders at this time of year by keeping numbers in the area low.
Please positively represent care for the site when communicating about this activity. Mitigation to care for this place is part of the activity, not an obstruction to it. If you have any questions, including why any of these mitigations are important, please ask us ahead of your visit so we can support effectively.

If you have any questions, please contact Laura, using the information provided on booking, or the contact form below, allowing 48 hours to reply (I do not have internet onsite).
Questions? Ask Laura.
Please allow 48 hours to respond - I do not have coverage on site.
