Join Lewis Sharp, Secretary of the Palmerston Forts Society, and Artist Laura Trevail for an artists day at Coalhouse Fort exploring heritage and fear.
This is a professional development day for artists to spend creative time at Coalhouse Fort together, on the eve of its re-animation. We will be digging into scary territories, wrapped in the arms of this tenacious and protective fortress.

For professional artists at all stages of your career. Old hands, returners, emerging artists at any stage of life (18+), artists at a time of change all welcome. Any media or background. All kinds of art practice is equally valued in this space - I mean it, you don’t need to justify the work you make, just bring yourselves and the fire of your own hearts.

A chance to spend time in the Fort, learn some stuff, and develop your own work.
Bring materials you like to work with that will not mark the environment, sketchbooks, cameras etc.

This activity forms part of Laura’s commission at Coalhouse Fort
“Fortified in times of threat, neglected in times of safety, surprisingly responsive to change and opportunity, the history of Coalhouse Fort speaks strongly to challenges facing us all right now. There’s a tenacity, a stubborn-ness to the place, combined with broad and expansive strategic views. A much-needed hope, even in the cracked and dampening stone.”
This work is made possible through a co-commission from Start Thurrock and Essex Cultural Diversity Project supported by Arts Council England
