The Lighting Passage
Writing ghost stories at Coalhouse Fort. In collaboration with Thurrock Libraries. Creative professional development for writers.
DATE: Thursday 09th October
LOCATION; Coalhouse Fort - meet at the gate just before the start time to check in. TIME: TIME: 10:30 - 15:00
AGE: 18+
PLACES: 12

PLACES LIMITED - BOOKING ESSENTIAL.
Join Artist/Writer Laura Trevail, Librarian Joseph Cooper, and Coalhouse Fort Advisory Group Chair Allen Jones for a day writing ghost stories at Coalhouse Fort on the eve of its re-animation.
Step into the empty (or is it?) Fort with your writing implements at the ready, as Autumn wraps us in its arms. We will explore the site and elements of its history, supporting texts from Thurrock Libraries with Jo, some prompts and technical creepery with Laura, and settle to write ghost stories of our own amongst the metal, wood, earth and stone.

This is a creative development activity for professional writers at any point in your career. Old hands, returners, emerging writers at any stage of life (18+), writers at a time of change all welcome. Any media or background. All styles of writing are equally valued in this space - I mean it, you don’t need to justify the work you make, just bring yourselves and the fire of your own hearts.

A chance to spend time in the Fort, learn some stuff, and develop your own work.

Bring anything you like to write with, all facets of your imagination, and a sense of adventure.
Trigger warning - adult themes and scary stuff

This activity forms part of Laura’s commission at Coalhouse Fort
“Fortified in times of threat, neglected in times of safety, surprisingly responsive to change and opportunity, the history of Coalhouse Fort speaks strongly to challenges facing us all right now. There’s a tenacity, a stubborn-ness to the place, combined with broad and expansive strategic views. A much-needed hope, even in the cracked and dampening stone.”
This work is made possible through a co-commission from Start Thurrock and Essex Cultural Diversity Project supported by Arts Council England
